The Ultimate Guide to Toddler Sleep: Tips, Strategies, and My Upcoming Masterclass

May 12, 2025

If you’re a parent of a toddler, you know that bedtime can often feel like a battle. One minute, they’re winding down, and the next, they’re wide awake, fighting off sleep with every ounce of energy they have. Between the tantrums, the endless requests for water, the “I need to have a wee!” calls, and the struggle to settle, bedtime can feel like the hardest part of the day.

But the truth is, you’re not failing. If you’re struggling with your toddler’s sleep, you’re not alone. In fact, this is a completely normal part of development, and there are strategies and tools that can help you navigate this stage with ease.

That’s why I’m hosting a Toddler Sleep Masterclass on Saturday, May 17th at 7:30 PM for £35. The best part? The session will be recorded, so you can watch it at your convenience if you can’t attend live.

In this blog post, I’ll share with you some of the insights and tips I’ll be covering in the workshop, along with practical advice that you can implement right now to improve your toddler’s sleep.

Understanding Toddler Sleep Challenges

As toddlers grow and develop, their sleep patterns change. While they may have been great sleepers as babies, this stage can bring new challenges. Toddlers become more aware of their surroundings, have developing imaginations, and start testing boundaries—bedtime being one of them.

Some common toddler sleep challenges include:

  • Separation anxiety: Your toddler may struggle with being away from you at bedtime. This is normal, especially during times of change or transition.
  • Bedtime resistance: Your toddler may suddenly fight sleep, resisting the idea of going to bed no matter how tired they are.
  • Night wakings: It’s normal for toddlers to wake up during the night, but how you respond can make a big difference.
  • Fear of the dark: Many toddlers develop fears around nighttime, which can make settling down for sleep a challenge.
  • Frequent requests: Your toddler may constantly ask for water, more stories, or “one more hug,” delaying their bedtime further.

While these challenges can feel overwhelming, there are solutions that can help your toddler (and you) get the restful sleep you both need.

The Importance of a Consistent Bedtime Routine

One of the most effective ways to tackle toddler sleep challenges is to create a consistent bedtime routine. Children thrive on consistency, and knowing what to expect before bed can help them feel safe and secure.

A calming and predictable bedtime routine signals to your toddler’s brain that it’s time to wind down and get ready for sleep. A great routine doesn’t need to be long or complicated, but it should include activities that help your toddler relax.

Here’s an example of a soothing bedtime routine:

  1. Bath time – A warm bath can help your toddler unwind and signal that it’s time to relax.
  2. Storytime – Reading a calming book can help ease your toddler’s mind and make them feel secure.
  3. Cuddles or quiet time – A little snuggling can provide comfort and connection before they go to sleep.
  4. A goodnight phrase – Whether it’s a simple “Sweet dreams!” or something special, a consistent phrase lets your toddler know it’s time for sleep.

Consistency is key here. The more predictable the routine, the easier it will be for your toddler to settle down.

Managing Bedtime Resistance

It’s common for toddlers to suddenly resist going to bed. Whether they’re not ready to stop playing or they’re anxious about being left alone, bedtime resistance can be a frustrating experience for parents. However, the key to managing bedtime resistance is to stay calm, consistent, and patient.

Here are a few strategies to try:

  • Offer choices: Toddlers love to feel in control. Give them some autonomy in their bedtime routine by offering simple choices, like choosing between two books for storytime or picking their pajamas.
  • Keep it calm: The more you react to your toddler’s resistance, the more you may escalate the situation. Instead of engaging in a power struggle, keep your tone calm and consistent, reminding them that it’s time for bed.
  • Validate their feelings: If your toddler is upset or anxious about bedtime, acknowledge their feelings. You could say, “I know you don’t want to go to bed right now, but it’s time to rest so we can have a fun day tomorrow.”
  • Set clear boundaries: Toddlers are testing boundaries, so it’s important to be firm yet loving. For example, “I’ll stay here for one more minute, but then it’s time to sleep.”

It’s important to remember that bedtime resistance is a normal phase in your toddler’s development, and it will eventually pass. Consistency, patience, and empathy are the keys to managing it.

What to Do When Your Toddler Wakes Up at Night

Night wakings are another common challenge during the toddler years. Whether it’s from a nightmare, thirst, or simply needing reassurance, how you respond to night wakings will play a big role in whether or not your toddler gets back to sleep easily.

Here’s how you can handle night wakings:

  • Keep it brief: If your toddler wakes up during the night, keep your response calm and brief. Avoid picking them up or engaging in a long conversation. Simply reassure them with a soft voice, tell them it’s still bedtime, and guide them back to sleep.
  • Be consistent: If your toddler starts waking up at night regularly, it’s important to be consistent in how you handle it. For example, if you’ve decided not to let them come into your bed, stick to that decision.
  • Nightlights and comfort items: If your toddler is afraid of the dark, try using a nightlight. A comfort item, like a favorite blanket or stuffed animal, can also help them feel secure.

If your toddler’s night wakings continue or become frequent, it may be worth looking at their daytime routines, sleep environment, or possible discomforts (e.g., teething).

Creating a Sleep-Inducing Environment

The environment in which your toddler sleeps plays a big role in how well they sleep. A sleep-friendly environment can help your toddler feel more relaxed and ready for sleep. Here are a few tips to create the perfect sleep environment:

  • Keep the room cool and dark: Toddlers sleep best in a cool, dark environment. A room that’s too hot or too bright can interfere with sleep.
  • Use white noise: White noise machines or a fan can help block out background noise and make the sleep environment more soothing.
  • Limit screen time before bed: The blue light from screens can interfere with melatonin production, making it harder for your toddler to fall asleep. Try to avoid screen time for at least an hour before bed.
